Everyone loves a good engagement story!

A marriage proposal is a moment in life that one will treasure forever and it will be shared again and again with family, friends and even strangers. Nowadays, technology has played a large part in creating new and unique marriage proposals. Not only is it creative, but its a great way to document the proposal to cherish forever. Using the iPhone’s applications and video features, these three grooms created what we like to call ‘iProposals’!

So You’re Engaged…Now What??

If you are one of the lucky new ladies to become engaged over the holidays ~ CONGRATULATIONS!!  This is such an exciting time for you, your Fiancé (don’t you love to say that??), your families and your friends.  Now that you have made all your calls and most certainly updated your Facebook status your thoughts turn to all the details, details details!

So where do you start?  We thought we would give you a few quick pointers:

1.  Make a stop at your favorite Salon and make sure your nails look great – after all, over the coming weeks it will be all about looking at the Ring!  Try out one of Winter’s hot colors, dark blue or deep purple.

2.  Agree on your Budget & Prioritize what is really important to you.   This is the most important first step to take with your Fiancé and your parents.  Once you have a general number, think about the three areas that are most important to you, whether it be the food, the music, the photography, and note it.  This will be critical information as you start to divvy up the funds.

3.  Contact us!! In all seriousness, once you have determined the budget for your wedding you should reach out to an experienced Wedding Consultant who can help you put a detailed budget and plan in place to start you on the right path.  So many times we see couples who have spent a large majority of their budget on their venue and it makes it that much harder to have all the other things they desire.  Working with a professional will help you avoid these pitfalls.  We can also point you in the direction of some of the most qualified wedding professionals who will fit your style and your budget.  If you are looking to make your wedding design truly your own, working with a Wedding Consultant will help you think outside the box.  Not sure what you want the look to be?  We can help you develop an overall design – from the invitation to the lighting to the table number – that reflects you both.  For your free consultation give us a call at 973-525-5884 or email at info@thefinishingtouchevents.com

4.  Start a  website or wedding blog that will allow you to continue to talk about your engagement and share the details of your planning with friends and family.  It is also a great way to make it easier to share details on travel, lodging and local attractions if you have guests coming in from out of town.  Be sure to post a lot of pictures and share your Engagement story and how you fell in love.

5.  Lastly and MOST importantly, take time to enjoy Your Honey. One of the most important things to remember when planning your Wedding is that it can sometimes be a stressful time, so be sure to enjoy moments with your Fiancé along the way and remember why you making all of these plans.  Spend evenings enjoying dinner together or even schedule a couple’s massage.  Whatever you do, take the time to let each other know how much you appreciate one another and how excited you are to get married.

Just a quick point on the things you don’t have to think about right away – and don’t want to find yourself stuck thinking about so early in the process:

1.  Your first dance song – you have plenty of time to let this one come to you.  And don’t worry – it will.

2.  All the specific details of your menu – remember it should change based on season and you may not know that much yet!

3.  Picking your wedding colors – wait until you know your venue and time of year and this may help drive your decisions.

Congratulations again and we can’t wait to hear from you!!

Stephanie Gets Engaged!

We are so excited to share that our very own Stephanie is engaged! Stephanie and her fiance Greg were engaged this summer and are now starting out on their own wedding planning journey. Stephanie will be sharing her experience of planning her own wedding (as a planner!) throughout the entire process. We can’t wait to help put all of the details of her day together!

____________________________________________________________________________________________

People always say you find love when you least expect it, cliche or not, that is exactly how my story began.

I can remember the day my childhood friend Ashley called saying, “Remember when we were little and dreamed about our wedding day? Well, Jeff proposed and I would love for you to be one of my bridesmaids!”  Without hesitation the words rolled right off my tongue, “Of course I will, I’d love too!”.  Little did I know that accepting my role as a bridesmaid would change my life forever.

The details of the wedding began effortlessly falling into place, just as I had seen so many times before. In just a few short months, the wedding was here and I could not wait to witness Ashley and Jeff’s big day. The night before their wedding, the rehearsal was held to go through all of the elements of the ceremony. This was also the first time the entire bridal party would meet and right off the bat, there was one Groomsman who caught my attention. His name was Greg and he was the younger brother of the Groom. He seemed really fun and was making jokes the entire time which took away some of the ‘wedding jitters’ that everyone experiences.

The wedding was held on a beautiful June day and started off without a hitch. After the ceremony, the bridal party went with the Bride and Groom to do some fun photos around town. Greg and I had a little time to chat in between photos and once again he made me laugh and I was happy to have met him.

The Bridal Party Greeting the Bride and Groom!

We headed to the reception where the night was filled with great food, drinks and music. Seated on opposite sides of the ballroom, Greg and I didn’t see each other much throughout the night, but he was certainly on my mind. Towards the end of the evening, the lyrics of Eric Clapton’s ‘Wonderful Tonight’ started to fill the room.  Across the dance floor came Greg and he asked me to dance! I accepted and ever since that amazing moment when I hear those timeless lyrics I still get butterflies.

A week or so later, we connected and went out on our first date. After dinner and a movie, we sat outside under the moonlight and laughed and talked for hours. It was the perfect date with the perfect man. The next three years are a whirlwind of emotions, memories, laughter and learning.  Each memory feels as though it was yesterday. I have found my best friend, my soulmate, my other half.

Although each memory seems like yesterday our most recent milestone, our engagement, is slightly blurred. Vacationing on the beautiful, Long Beach Island, Greg had all of the details set.  Like most fairytales, nothing goes as planned which is much like how it happened for us that day.  We woke up early to head down to the beach to watch the sunrise. It was a chilly, foggy morning – not quite ideal.  Exhausted, I tried to persuade Greg to do something romantic another morning but he persisted and with much chagrin I agreed.

As we walked hand in hand from our house to the beach I smiled and thought about how lucky I was. The brisk ocean breeze took away the sleepiness and I was excited to watch the sunrise with my love. We propped ourselves on a giant sand mound which had almost formed into a bench- I guessed it was a sandcastle which the ocean had begun to wash away.  I’m sure the little kids who were feverishly building the day before had no idea this exact location which their castle stood upon held the start of the first chapter of “our” life. While the waves crashed against the shore and we sat gazing up at the parting clouds, the beautiful pink and orange colors began to shine.

The Sunrise!

As I was staring at the beautiful sight before me, Greg said how much he loved me and how he can’t wait to spend our lives together – you would think I’d catch on at this point but Greg and I were always talking about our future together so it was nothing out of the ordinary. As I turned towards him to thank him for bringing me to watch the sunrise, he was down on one knee with an open box and beautiful ring glistening in the now risen sun. “Stephanie, I love you, Will you Marry Me?!”  I wanted to speak but I didn’t move and the amazing feelings people always describe began to flood over me.  I knew that I was making the easiest decision I would ever have to make and I said YES!!

Engaged!

When we got back to the house like all brides do I excitedly called, emailed and texted all of my friends and family wanting to share the amazing news.  They all showered us with love and best wishes.

We are so excited to begin our lives together!

“Greatest Marriage Proposal EVER”? Well, it’s certainly the cutest!

This viral YouTube video might just make your future hubby jealous! A Georgia man, Matt Still, decided to get creative when proposing to his true love, Ginny Joiner. Matt hired a professional videographer to make his cinematic proposal come to life. He also enlisted the help of the local movie theater which allowed him to play the first part of the proposal on the big screen.

Matt tricked Ginny into going to the movies with her brother while he was “at work”. First, two actual movie trailers come on the screen. Then- the proposal begins!

What Ginny doesn’t know is that the movie theater is actually filled with her family and friends, and a videographer is shooting her during the whole proposal.

We give this proposal a thumbs up, but you might need to grab some tissues before watching!

We love pre-wedding parties!  They give the couple a chance to celebrate with family and friends without the formalities of the wedding day.  They also give the couple an opportunity to express themselves and do something unique and fun.  That’s why we were thrilled when our couple, Rosemarie and Robert, asked us to help them plan and design an all out engagement bash at the Palisadium in Palisades Park, NJ.

The couple wanted something romantic and fun with lots of sparkle.  To compliment the breathtaking NYC skyline views from the Palisadium’s wrap around windows, we created a romantic Victorian inspired event with a modern City Chic twist.

The event was announced with custom designed invitations from our Paperie team.  Silver embossed pockets were embellished with handmade crystal chiffon paper, black velvet ribbon, and gorgeous rhinestone vintage buttons.

We designed four coordinating table designs in pink, black, and silver with crystal and rhinestone accents.  Incredible flowers displayed throughout the room were provided by Santos Florist.  Our friends at Confectionary Designs outdid themselves with an absolutely gorgeous 4-tier cake with sugar pearl accents and custom heart cookie favors that complimented the donation made to the American Heart Association.

We congratulate this beautiful couple on their engagement and look forward to their wedding in June 2012!

Thank you to our incredible vendor team for making this a night to remember:

An Engagement Story: Front Page News!

Getting engaged is one of the most exciting times in one's life and the proposal will be remembered forever.

Grooms are popping the question in new and exciting ways, making it more and more personalized, which truly adds to that special moment.

Our newly engaged couple Rosemarie and Robert agreed to let us share the details of their unique engagement. To create his perfect proposal, Robert had a fake newspaper printed up  (www.trixiepixgraphics.com) with an article featuring his and Rosemarie's engagement. Recently, many of their friends have become engaged so he used that as a way to present the paper to Rosemarie, saying "Now look who is getting engaged!" and tossed the paper to her. When she read the article and realized what was going on, Robert got down on one knee and asked her to marry him. Of course, she said yes!!

The Finishing Touch Congratulates Rosemarie and Robert and wishes them all the best!!

Storytelling Photo Shoots: Claudia & Andy

Claudia20

As Engagement Season is upon us we wanted to share with you one of our favorite recent Engagement Shoots with our fun couple Claudia and Andy:

Everyone has seen the oh-so-typical engagement pictures couples like to have taken prior to their wedding day. Often times, these photos are used as a Save the Date, a  Holiday card, or are framed decor for their wedding reception. Our May 2010 couple, Claudia and Andy wanted to put a different spin on their engagement shoot and certainly did just that.

Working with Heather Waraksa, New York City-based professional photographer who was recently ranked in the Top 10 Wedding Photographers by PopPhoto.com, made it easy for our couple to produce enthralling and unique photographs.

In early November, Claudia and Andy brought a few changes of clothes to a suite at the famous Hotel Chelsea and met Heather for a day of shooting.  The suite provided a luxurious and dynamic backdrop for our couple's photo shoot. Heather photographed in a time lined sequence, outlining a glamorous and romantic night out in the city.We can not wait to see the photos Heather produces for their wedding at the Crystal Plaza.

Take a look at Heather's Blog to see all the fantastic shots: Claudia & Andy's Photo Shoot

Nancy & Rafael’s City Chic Engagement Photos

When our clients Nancy & Rafael went for their engagement photo session in Central Park back in April, we had expected to see the typical "Springtime in the City" type shots.  Instead the photos were romantic, chic and really captured the feel of NYC.  These gorgeous photos were taken by David and Tami of the Studio Photographers who never cease to impress us.

To ensure all of their guests could share in the experience, the photos were made into a fabulous guest book for the wedding and we placed additional photos on display at the reception.

If you think these pictures are great, wait until you see the amazing detail that went into their wedding day in June.  We are so excited to share those details and the fantastic photos from the Studio Photographers ~ we promise they are coming soon!

Happy Planning,
