Guest Blogger: Pam and Stephanie from Confectionary Designs ~ Check out this Cake!!
Wednesday the 31st of March
With the
increasing popularity of television shows featuring celebrity cake designers,
more and more people are looking for unique cakes to be served at their events.
Options for designs are unlimited: do you want a traditional tiered cake with
sugar flowers, a sculpted dragon breathing fire, a cake that duplicates your
favorite purse and shoes, or a life-sized replica of your grandmother’s hope
chest?
Although
the science of baking has withstood the test of time and tradition, the art of
decorating has kept up with the digital age. With the use of edible inks,
graphic programs, and electronic cutters, many bakers can duplicate logos,
treasured photographs, or lace effects to decorate your cake with.
The
following bridal shower cake was made to complement the bride’s elegant wedding
invitation which was created by The Finishing Touch. Various techniques were used in the creation of the cake,
including hand piping, adding texture to the fondant with a linen roller, scanning the
invitations and using an electronic cutter to create the scrolls. We created poured sugar
beads, hand-modeled gum-paste roses and a sugar duplicate of the invitation which sat a top the pillows.

Your
cake or other dessert presentation is an important element in the overall
design for your event and can serve as a wonderful centerpiece. The following
is a guide to help you get that cake of your dreams:
- Come
up with design ideas that you think will work as an overall theme for your event. Browse the internet or magazines for inspiration. Don’t just look at
cakes; use other elements for your design. For example, do you want the cake to
complement your invitations; is there an theme like Mardi Gras for your event;
for a wedding do you want your cake to include design elements from your dress?
Use any idea to spark your imagination!
The sky's the limit when it comes to creating a beautiful cake.
- You
should have an idea of the type of cake you want – will it be a traditional
cake, a display of mini cupcakes, or a whimsical cake that fits your
personality?
- Start
to narrow down the list of bakers you would like to meet with and make tasting
/design appointments. Make sure you discuss your budget with the baker prior to
making your appointment, as some may not be able to work within your budget.
Your goal during this initial consultation is to determine if you are satisfied
with the product quality, review the baker’s portfolio, and determine who can
help you create your dream cake.
Many bakeries are booked several
months in advance, especially during peak seasons like wedding season and
holidays, so book early if you have a specific baker in mind. Your baker should
be working with you on the design, and asking you questions such as: “How do
you envision your event? The color/design of your flowers? What meal will be
served at the event, lunch or dinner? What is being served? Is this an outdoor
event? What is the theme? Are you thinking of something offbeat or classic?
Approximately how many guests are you anticipating?” All of these questions,
and others, will help determine the best design and flavors to fit your preferences.
The bottom line is, cakes are no
longer viewed as merely two-layers with frosting on top. Today, cake decorating
has gone to a whole new level and has become an art form of its own. With a
little imagination and the guidance of your chosen baker, the possibilities are
endless with what can be created for your special event.
